CARE: Rapid aid from Luxembourg!

CARE in Luxemburg a.s.b.l. was founded in March 2008. Already during the first year, humanitarian aid from Luxembourg was put under several tests. Although the number of catastrophes was lower than in previous years, 2008 was the year with the most victims from catastrophes since the Tsunami in 2004. Whereas the casualty count was at 16,871 in 2007 it reached its heights in 2008 with 235,816 victims.

The greatest and most dramatic natural disaster of that year – the hurricane Nargis in Myanmar – became the first touchstone for CARE in Luxemburg. In May, the hurricane killed 138,000 people and left hundreds of thousands unsheltered. Thanks to the Luxembourgish population and government, CARE was able to distribute 3,171 supporting packets to families already in May of that same year.

Summer 2008, we started out help for Somalian refugees, which seeked asylum in the Kenyan refugee camp in Dadaab. In this largest refugee camp of Africa, they were provided with clean water and jerrycans. This was the only way to avoid the spreading of waterborne diseases, amongst the weakest for which they constitute a lethal thread.

Later in the year, CARE helped the war victims in Georgia to endure the winter season, as many houses were destroyed during the conflict in the border region between Georgia and Russia. CARE supported people in securing at least one room per house against the cold and harsh weather. Furthermore, families received wood rations for heating.

In October, an earthquake in the Belutschistan region in Pakistan destroyed scores of houses.  With blankets and robust tents, and thanks to Luxembourgish donations, CARE in Luxembourg could help the shelterless to overcome the winter safely.

Droughts and the global food crisis had and still have a harsh impact on food scarcity in Ethiopia. Therefore CARE in Luxemburg has made efforts to support 1,800 intensely malnourished children, pregnant women and nursing mothers with specially enriched nutrition.  Further Luxembourgish donations supported CARE-Help in Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The crises in both countries will also become one of the future emphases of the work from CARE in Luxembourg. Next to the long time refugee- and nutritional crises, CARE will again in 2009 use much energy to help people which are victims of climatic based humanitarian disasters. The rapid worldwide help after storms, floods and droughts will remain the core expertise of CARE in Luxemburg.

CARE in Luxemburg a.s.b.l.: A strong partner in the fight against poverty and distress

It is only possible to realize CARE-Help from Luxembourg with the support of Luxembourgish partners. Ahead of all is the Luxembourgish ministry of foreign affairs, which largely sustains humanitarian aid from CARE. CARE-donators have trusted the organisation greatly from the beginning. Starting in 2009, CARE-donations can be fiscally considered. Further cooperation with the commune of Luxembourg, Luxembourgish companies and above all Luxembourgish schools have helped CARE in Luxemburg to become an integrated part of the Luxembourgish community.  In the future, CARE will expand proposals for students.

The collaboration with Luxembourgish service-clubs, such as the founding member Lions International District 113, will be expanded in order to maintain a fast reactivity after disasters.

A Goat for Laos

Typhoon Ketsana hit Laos in autumn 2009. Immediately, local CARE teams launched humanitarian aid. Beginning 2010 this aid will be replaced by programmes to support sustainably the nutritional situation of those regions most hit. Here, a goat improves the food security of a small family in the short and in the long run. Its milk enriches the daily menu and in a few years the goats will have propagated.
